CAMPEACI Youth for Tech

By - Dione Vanessa Posted On : Feb 28, 2024 "CY4T"

In today’s digital age, computer skills have become an essential requirement for both personal and professional development. The ability to effectively use computers and technology can open up a world of opportunities for youths, enabling them to enhance their productivity; increase participation in modern society and permit career advancement. However, many youths, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, may lack access to proper training and resources to develop these crucial skills. This program aims to address the digital divide by providing basic and intermediate computer skills training to Cameroonian youths, especially the girl child. By equipping them with the necessary knowledge and tools to navigate the digital landscape, we hope to empower them to achieve their full potential and succeed in an increasingly technology driven society. Through the combination of workshops, training sessions, and hand on practical exercises, we will cover a range of computer skills including basic computer literacy, internet navigation, word processing, spread sheet management, PowerPoint presentation, email and LinkedIn account creation, and graphic design. Additionally, we will also provide sensitization campaigns in school milieus on the need for digital skill, guidance on online safety, digital citizenship, and ethical internet usage to ensure that youths are equipped to navigate the digital world responsibly. By investing in computer skills development of youths, we can help bridge the digital divide, empower them to pursue further education and employment opportunities, and ultimately foster a more inclusive and tech savvy society. We invite partners and stakeholders to join us in this initiative and make a meaningful impact on the lives of youths in our community

Developing Basic & intermediate Computer Skills of Cameroonian Youths – especially the Girl Child

The digital age has brought about a significant shift in how we live, work, and communicate, with more and more youths awakening to the indispensability of computer skills for career enhancement However, not everyone has been able to keep pace with these changes. There is a growing digital divide, with many youths - especially the girl child, particularly those from undeserved communities, lacking access to resources and training to develop vital computer skills, or simply ignorant of how and where to begin their tech journey. This subtle ignorance, lack of access to technology and computer education puts these youths at a disadvantage limiting their opportunities for personal growth and professional success. While government actions to award over 100,000 laptop to university students across the national territory partly sought to ameliorated this situation, it was by no means exhaustive.

Without basic computer skills, youths may struggle to complete school assignments and effectively communicate in a world that is increasingly reliant on technology while most decent paying jobs require proficiency in computer and basic office applications. This situation perpetuates a cycle of inequality and further marginalizes these youths from fully participating in a digital society. Addressing this gap in computer skills amongst youths is crucial to ensuring that they are equipped to thrive in the digital age and have equal access to the opportunities that technology can provide. That is why CAMPEACI in collaboration with partners seek to enhance the literacy amongst Cameroonian youths on basic and intermediate computer skills.

This program targets youths – especially the girl child, specifically those between the ages of 15 to 30 years old, who lack access to proper computer skills training and resources. This demographic may include individuals from undeserved communities, low-income households, rural areas, and marginalized groups who face barriers to access technology and computer education. These youths may be facing challenges such as limited access to computer and the internet, lack of exposure to technology in their educational settings, or limited financial resources to enroll in formal computer training programs. They may also lack the support and guidance needed to develop essential computer skills that are increasingly necessary for academic success, job opportunities and overall digital literacy. The target population may also include; school dropouts, unemployed youths, or those seeking to enhance their skills for further education or employment prospects. By focusing on this specific demographic, the program aims to provide tailored support/ curriculum and resources to bridge the digital divide and empower youths to navigate the digital world effectively and confidently.
