Gender-Based Violence

Gender Based Violence is violence that targets an individual or group of individuals on the bases of their gender which results in physical, sexual or psychological harm. Political, economic, legal and cultural norms are said to be some of the underlying causes of this violence. One in three women worldwide will experience violence in their life time, while 5 women are killed by their partner or family member.

However in a seemingly patriarchal society where women are most vulnerable to Gender Based Violence, violence can happens both ways, to men as well as to women. Putting a stop to this violence necessitates action at all levels, but first, we must talk about these issues, break the silence, and taking away the shame or stigma.

An Additional Point

Also, challenging social norms, creating awareness like through this video and strengthening legislation to criminalize violence, and persecuting the perpetrators are some applaudable actions against Gender Based Violence. We are not asking for much, just for a society where both men and women are given equal opportunities to strive.

By so doing, the world will benefit from the movement of talent from both sexes into the workplace given the rarity of talents and the necessity of utilizing them. For all you know this may be your brother, sister or even your mother. Together let’s say no to all forms of Gender Based Violence.
